Win Lose or Draw – Part I: The Simple Answer
Once upon a time, there was a man who wanted to attain enlightenment and he decided to start his journey by looking for a Master.
After checking around he came to know about a renowned Master who resided in a mountain nearby. The Master was well known for giving sage advice according to each individual’s circumstances. He decided to go and look for the Master and learn from him.
It did not take him long to find where the Master was located. The man asked the Master a few questions, of which the main question was: “Master, I would like to attain enlightenment, please give me your sagely guidance.”
To which the Master answered: ”Every day, both in the morning and night, look at yourself in the mirror and ask: “Who am I?” Three Times, and if you do this long enough, with perseverance and consistency, you will be on your pathway to enlightenment.” With that, the man thanked the Master and left.
Win Lose Or Draw – Part II: It Was All Too Simple and Easy For Him
On the way going down the mountain, he was recalling the encounter of meeting the Master. There was a sense of calm and peace in the whole meeting. However, he just felt that there was something amiss, to which he realized: "It Was Too Simple and Easy."
You see, this man has worked hard throughout his life to achieve the many things that he wanted. The solution provided by the Master was just “Not Right” according to his basic beliefs and the roadmaps of how he lived his life and attaining his accomplishments so far.
Win Lose Or Draw – Part III: The Journey
Without wasting anytime, the man started his quest to look for his second Master. The search was fruitless in the beginning, until he finally seeks the advice of an old man, whom pointed him the direction to a Master who lived in a remote land. The old man told him that it will be a long and treacherous journey and that the Master resided near the top of a tall mountain that is the steepest to climb.
After thanking the old man, the man set-off in his journey to find his 2nd Master. The journey was very tough, even for a very determined man like him. After a few months of crossing vast lands and climbing the steep and tall mountain, he finally reached his destination.
Win Lose Or Draw – Part IV: The Next Master
After finding the location, he was not granted access to the Master.
He has decided and wanted to be the disciple of this Master. Committed as he was, the kneeled and waited outside the house for 3 full days, taking the scorching heat of the sun and the piercing coldness of the nights.
Upon knowing the intention of the man wanting to achieving enlightenment, the Master finally agreed to meet and accept the man as his disciples at the end of the 3 days to teach him the path to enlightenment.
Win Lose Or Draw – Part V: The Austere Journey and the Revelation
The man was told to lead a very austere life, starting each day well before the sun rises and to perform many straining tasks during the day that requires physical exertions such as fetching water from a far away river, chopping woods etc and perform similar tasks to a few villages as a service for free near and far from the mountain. The man listened and followed exactly what was told and was totally exhausted at the end of each and every day.
This process continues for a quite a few years…
One day, the man decided to seek his Master's advice about his progress, he said: “Master, I have been following and doing exactly what was told and after these years, while I feel that I have experienced spiritual growth in some ways, I think I can progress even better. Please tell me what should I do next towards achieving enlightenment?”
To which the Master replied: “Good, now that you are ready, I shall tell you."
The Master said:
"Every day, both in the morning and night, look at yourself in the mirror and ask: “Who am I?” Three Times. ...”
